Circular Quay seems to possess a lot of average restaurants supplying average food with average service. In fact, the only thing not average about them is their soaring prices. The trick is sidestepping the tourist trek and visiting a restaurant like Quadrant that consistently concocts an above-average restaurant experience. The lunch special offers two courses for $65 matched with accompanying wines, an easy way to enjoy the view of the Opera House and harbour without getting involved in the chaos of the Quay.
Quadrant is a spacious and quiet restaurant, favoured for business lunches and dinners where distractions are not welcome. The service operates quietly in the background, meals and beverages arriving fast. Mains include a nostalgic dish of pork fillet served with sweet caramelised apple, prune and Armagnac and pan-fried barramundi with crisp Asian greens in an invigorating XO sauce. For desserts consider the sticky date pudding and candied ginger ice-cream or warm Valhrona chocolate cake served with berry compote and double cream. Executive chef Ross Barrett has gathered experience in Egypt, London, France and Vietnam, resulting in rather inspired dishes that manage to be innovative while still pleasing to traditionalists. Just a tiptoe from the Opera House, there’s a pre-theatre special to please concert-goers.
