Profiled by de Groots Media
The Bourbon opened in 1967 and has since become a Kings Cross icon, recognisably located near the fountain at the junction of Macleay Street and Darlinghurst Road. Although known for its late night liquor licence, it’s also popular for a quick and easy feed. Chefs Colin Holt and John Glinatsis have designed a modern Australian pub menu that is crowd pleasing and big on meat. Carnivorous appetites will be more than sated with the 350g rib eye fillet with Cafe de Paris butter or the Chinese-style ribs, house-smoked and braised in black bean sauce.
Lighter options include Thai warm duck salad with chilli, peanuts and pickled vegetables, or roast Hapuka fillet with English spinach and apple balsamic dressing. The bistro is casual by all accounts; patrons order at the counter and pick up their food when it’s ready. The indoor tables have a flat screen television at their disposal while the outdoor seats have a clear vantage point over the colour and activity of the Cross’ main strip. The location makes it a useful place to have dinner and drinks before heading out in earnest.
