Profiled by de Groots
In the heart of the city, the heritage listed Grace Hotel is a building steeped in Sydney’s history. While the exterior is as charming and untouched as it was in 1930, the interior has been updated to make the most of its centralised location. The Grace Cafe welcomes you in on street level, an airy space with high ceilings and wraparound windows that flood the cafe with light and views of the bustling CBD. It specialises in modern Australian cafe cuisine and offers three meals a day as well as afternoon tea.
For dinner start with the prawn and chicken wonton soup. The clear chicken broth with Chinese vegetables is a perfect appetiser, whetting the appetite without being too filling. Move onto the grilled barra tails with caper butter, or for something heartier order the grilled pork cutlet with spiced apple chutney. A small local wine list provides good companionship for the uncomplicated food. Desserts are an exercise in indulgence, the chocolate mousse (made from Haigh’s couverture and topped with freshly whipped cream) vying for favour against the baci (hazelnut marquise layered on chocolate sponge and ganache). To cut through the richness, there’s a good selection of loose leaf herbal teas including a lemongrass and mint infusion.
