Skirting the edge of East Terrace, Botanic Cafe’s face is as pretty as its personality. The generous street frontage is an extension of the dining room, where pavement tables are screened from the sun by energetic greenery and wide calico umbrellas. Even better news, the kind staff won’t forget you if you choose to dine outside. The menu is very Italian, and the entree of fried local squid with a tangle of fresh rocket and chilli garlic aioli is a charmer, though the half-duck with poached quince is just as appealing.
Inside, the large room is divided by screens, gauze curtains, columns and a slab of marble serving as a high table. Stunning artworks of pinks and violets flush each opposite wall and discerning diners sip espresso and talk business. The regulars know Botanic’s style of fine food down to the type of pasta used, and can eat the aromatic risotto marinara, without a splash of sauce going astray. As you’d hope, the drinks list has some great wines by the glass and the staff love to recommend wine and food matches.
